    What is fascinating about art is that like some lichens it can attach itself to anything it wishes and create a symbiotic commensal symbiosis.

Anything with an "art" intention, if it is given the name, is given a different status and a different status and a different look.

By this maxim, the art appears to me not immutable, capable of taking on any idea coming out of my imagination, and this evidence transpires in my practice.
Focusing on a certain form of research and curiosity, my work touches as much on purely aesthetic illustration as on sepulchres sacralizing lifeless bodies, on potato piles as on the creation of micronations.

I like to wonder about what is hidden, to ask myself questions that I do not understand and to know that every act has a meaning that will be revealed later on.

Sorrel Island
[with Thibault Arnoul]
    - Multidisciplinary project

︎

   It was in 2024, following various wanderings on the internet, that the Sorrel Island first came to Gil's attention.

    Not appearing on any map or official document, this Rhine island, which appeared around 1970 as a result of human work on the river, was the start of a project that was ambitious to say the least.

    Joined by Thibault Arnoul, it was in the form of a duo that the project really got underway, and that research was undertaken into this rare example of ‘Insula Nullius’ : a territory without a name, without status, divided between France and Germany.

    Their current project aims to :
        - Obtain official recognition of the island's existence and         give it a name.
        - Study and document its biodiversity and history.
        - Make it a symbol of innovation, ecology and artistic             cooperation, turning the island into an open-air laboratory         where everything remains to be invented.

    The ambition is to transform this newly forgotten place into a collective project with meaning and a future. Nothing has been decided yet, apart from the name:

L'Île à l'Oseille

as well as its flag, a subtle blend of colours combining France and Germany in a single representation that could be described as follows:

‘Square light purpure, charged with a wild goose, a temple and a sorrel branch sable; on a bend azure to sinister, a bend gules to dexter, a bend sable in chief and a bend Or in base.’

    Everything remains to be created, all directions are surveyable. For the time being, future projects include :
        - The creation of a “bureau de change” linked to the               Blansaint (a currency created by Thibault Arnoul), with             opening hours still to be defined;
        - The construction of office buildings for the “agent de           change” in charge of the project;
        - as well as an exhaustive report on the local flora and           fauna and any other information needed to make an                   exhaustive inventory of the island and everything about it.

    This is an evolving project, which will evolve over a long period of time, so anything can potentially be changed in the future.

    We invite you to return to this page in the future to learn more about the progress of the project.
